Upcoming Events

[October 18th, 2008] NRVTU Conservation Celebration!

Do you wish to know more about what NRVTU does to conservate trout in the NRV? We are organizing an event to do just that for all interested!

The event is not properly called a banquet, though we will serve food and drink. Th New River's Edge(click for website), a beautiful outdoor venue on the New River, is hosting our function which will featuer about four kiosks of interest to a broad audience of outdoors lovers and their families. The event is unstructured in that kiosks have revolving and open demonstrations which emphasize our conservation work along with fun that families may have exploring our regions streams--with a fly rod or not. We will feature several raffles and/or auctions, promising to create an exciting atmosphere.

  • Oct 6 - Cherokee Flats follow up - trail maintenace, etc
  • Oct 26-28 - NRVTU Fall Camping Trip!
  • Hello All, Considering the great time everyone had on our spring fishing trip, it would be nice to organize another trip before it gets too cold!

  • When: Friday, October 26-Sunday, October 28 (VT football plays Thursday!)
  • Where: Grayson Highlands Area
  • We have two options for our primary fishing location that Saturday, South Holston tailwaters, or Whitetop Laurel. I spoke with Bruce Wankel, owner of Virginia Creeper Fly Shop, and he recommends fishing the South Holston tailwaters due to the potential for leaves to be on the water. As he explained to me, the tailwaters will flush the leaves downriver or sink them when they generate late in the day. Regular creeks have the potential for leaf clutter on the surface. This of course depends a lot upon mother nature!

If we fish the tailwaters then we would need TN fishing licenses. Todd and I looked them up and they are $33 for three days (no single day licenses available for out of state) and you can buy them online. Last spring the trip cost was approximately $25 which included camping, 2 dinners, and 2 breakfasts with lunch on your own.

If you are interested in the trip please send me an email (kbyrd14@yahoo.com) and indicate your preference of fishing locations (South Holston/Whitetop Laurel). I will set up a separate email group to coordinate supplies, etc.

I hope you can join us. I'm sure we'll have a great time! By the way, if you're just starting out with fly fishing this is an excellent opportunity to pick up skills and climb the sometimes steep learning curve!

    2. Where: White Pines Horse Camp
    3. What:

The Embrace-a-Stream work at Dismal Creek will continue THIS SATURDAY, May 5th, with a tree planting at that site. Those interested in helping are encouraged to do so and will meet at 10AM at the White Pines Horse Camp on Dismal. Jason Bowman expects that with 15-20 hands, the planting should request about 1-1.5 hours. These 'hands' will be drawn from both the Clinch River Valley Chapter and NRVTU. From http://www.fs.fed.us/r8/gwj/easterndivide/recreation/horses/index.shtml, here are the directions to Dismal Creek (White Pines Horse Camp): Follow Rt 460 to Pearisburg. Take Rt 100 to Rt 42 (10 miles). Follow Rt 42 for 10 miles. Turn right onto Rt 606. Go 1 mile, turn right onto Rt 201 just past store. Go about 1.7 miles. White Pines Horse Camp is on the right.
