Todd Lowe and Ryan McManamay will discuss the chapter's proposal for maintenance and improvements at the Cherokee Flat area of Big Stony Creek (see the proposal here). The first chapter workday for this project is slated for Saturday, September 8th and we will conclude the workday with a cookout at Glen Alton. Finally, we will discuss the meeting that took place on July 26th at Glen Alton concerning conservation projects there in association with the National Forest Service and Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.

Quoting Ryan McManamay:
Currently, our July meeting is July 4th, which I personally would rather watch fireworks and eat homemade icecream as would others. Therefore, lets cancel the July 4th meeting and possibly have a board meeting July 5th (Thursday) same place at 7pm. We'll talk about Cherokee flats project: Todd and I drew up a proposal for the project, which we'll discuss along with how much effort and commitment and advertising. We thought it would be best to do the project in September; Students will be back and involvement will be higher. Plus it will give us time to get the word out. We can attempt to schedule it for the following week.
Secondly, we need to talk about getting a newsletter out along with the survey and any other potential info that is needed. Thirdly, the jackets/shirts are coming in July 5th. So you definitely want to come pick up your item.
Thanks, Ryan
Jim Thomas gave a talk about fly fishing in the Canadian Rockies and Dawn Kirk, National Forest Fisheries Biologist, spoke about NF management of trout habitat on public lands, in particular Stony Creek at Glen Alton. In business, Kevin Byrd highlighted the results from the special planning meeting [click here for his notes]. Also, Ryan has ordered T-Shirts and Columbia fishing shirts with the NRVTU logo, available by contacting Todd Lowe or Ryan McManamay.
A planning meeting was conducted to focus chapter efforts on mutual goals of the members. The tabulated results from the meeting including suggested concentrations and participator's votes may be downloaded in a MS-Word document [here].
Conducted chapter elections for executive board members and officers. Ryan and Todd reported on our first fishing/camping trip to Grayson Highlands State Park. It sounds like the group had a great time and caught many beautiful native Brookies. Most importantly, there was some great camaraderie by all. Todd gave a report on the Spring VCTU meeting (see his meeting notes here) and discussion about the Great Valley Project ensued. The need for an organizational planning meeting was identified.
Conducted chapter business of modifying bylaws and nominating new executive board members and officers. John Ross was present to speak about Council happenings and emphasized Trout in the Classroom programs, the Virginia Museum of Natural History project, and the TU Youth Fly Fishing camp.
John Copeland, warmwater fisheries biologist for VDGIF spoke about Smallmouth Bass and Walleye fishing conditions on the New River. Ryan McManamay also demonstrated tying the Kiwi Muddler.
